Welcome to the discussion, everyone. Judd is just wrapping up on the air, so we'll get set up. Feel free to send along your questions and we'll begin shortly!
Good question. The fact-finding in the Kluwe allegations will mater, but I don't think the next head coach will keep around Priefer either way, so that stuff may be inconseq
uential to the Vikings' job.
It may matter more to his ability to find another job elsewhere
Head coach because that's the person who will determine the coordinators. However, if the Vikings hire a defensive guy there is no doubt that the OC is going to be a huge hire because that person will work closely with the quarterback in the coming years.
Be careful about getting too caught up in these types of reports. Yesterday, the hot name flying around was Mike Zimmer and the sides haven't even talked yet. This doesn't mean Bowles won't impress the Vikings but the team is going to talk to a lot of candidates and a few will be very impressive. Doesn't mean they will get the job.
I don't gamble on sports so I'm not familiar with the Vegas or offshore lines. Does anyone in this hangout know if there are odds out currently? Feel free to share
I haven't heard any, no. Adam Gase, yes, but not Del Rio. Dubay really likes Del Rio but I don't know if Spielman is going to end up talking to him at this point. There was any early report the Vikings wanted to speak to both Gase and Del Rio. In some of these cases, the Vikings might want to pick the brains of coordinators and have no intention of hiring them.
I'd be surprised because wouldn't that equate to another veteran stopgap? I professed my wish was Cutler, but now that he's off the table, I'd go with Cassel next year. You already have the veteran stopgap.
Spielman's 13 caterogies are just where coaches can come from as far as their past. Example: Coordinators, position coaches, etc. While I don't think Spielman will carry if a guy is boring in front of a mike, I do think it will be important to him that he finds a guy who can command respect and the room. But many guys in the NFL today are conditioned to say nothing to the media and Spielman won't mind if his new coach fits that mold.
Dubay and I discussed this off the air today. It's disappointing for Vikings fans, but it seems to me that would limit the number of people interested in the job. The best interest of the Vikings is to have all top candidates viable; the best interest of Rick Spielman is to maintain total control of the roster. Those two might not mesh.
The Vikings reportedly talked to him this past weekend in the Seattle area. I like Bevell personally from having covered him but am not sure if Spielman will want to go with a "Childress guy."
Chance Jared Allen is with the Vikings next season: 0.2%
That's 1 in 500, for those keeping score at home.
The issue is that you would get little to nothing for Peterson. He's expensive, he's near 30 and the return for him would shock people because it would be so low. That being said, you can't justify giving Peterson away so I don't see any trade involving him happening.
And if the Vikings go to a 3-4 defense, Allen will run the other way, too. One reason it would be easy to switch to a 3-4 is because you no longer have to worry about Jared.
I don't see it happening. Especially since Spielman is making the hire and everyone is a self-preservationist -- similar to my answer to Linda's question earlier.
Gruden reportedly would need roster autonomy. Not going to happen in Minnesota.
If you are ever going to blow up the defense, you do it now. You can rebuild things at the same time but here's the deal. The defense was terrible so who cares how you rebuild it. Griffen would return and could be a good OLB in a 3-4. This team needs help at DT, NT, LB and secondary no matter the scheme so now they can pick the scheme they want.
Ha, I don't think he has any disillusions that he's football coaching material. He's an exec and he knows his lane.
I think he sticks around. He's basically all you have right now (as a sure thing) at linebacker.
No. I think Chris Cook is done here. He's just not very good and was a big swing and a miss by Spielman. Can't stay healthy and when he does he's not good. I think you need to look for a new CB to pair with Xavier Rhodes.
